Quam tristis fuisset aestas, nisi ego cantu meo omnium animos delectare conata essem.
favourites from the eighties: Clan of Xymox - Medusa (1986 Neatherlands)
An early darkwave classic and probably one of the best albums 4AD has ever released. I love those hypnotic instrumental themes mixed with dream pop-ish elements and pop tunes. I mean, Michelle is a great pop song, right?
favourites from the eighties: Echo and the Bunnymen - Heaven Up Here (1981 UK)
Also my favourite album by the group. I adore the bass lines and drums on this album. My mate O. once described this album as Jim Morrison’s hangover in the morning. The psychedelia’s over and it’s time for remorse, apocalypse, grief.
favourites from the eighties: Кино - Звесза по имени Солнце (1989 USSR)
(Kino - Zvezda po imeni Solntse)
Somewhat minimalistic new wave with a melancholic, distinctively North European athmosphere. Deep down, this is a great pop album. For friends of early The Cure.
favourites from the eighties: Flesh for Lulu - Big Fun City (1985 UK)
Both the band and this album are somewhat underrated and forgotten gems. Big Fun City is an exquisite mix of cheeriness, Lords of the New Church -style sleaze and morbid themes in new wave fashion. Coupled with Blue Sisters Swing EP (1985) this album is even better.
favourites from the eighties: Noir Désir - Veuillez rendre l’âme à qui elle appartient (1989 France)
Raw, energetic, passionate and sometimes surprisingly brooding alternative rock. This album is a great athmospheric, yet furious exception in Noir Désir’s excellent discography. (Le Fleuve deserves at least one listen from everyone who likes post-punk.)
favourites from the eighties: Indochine - Le Péril Jaune (1983 France)
A fantastic piece of French new wave that captured my heart many years ago. Great tunes, synths and echoing guitars.
favourites from the eighties: The Chameleons - Script of the Bridge (1983 UK)
This needs no explanation whatsoever. Script of the Bridge is a deep, dreamy, hauntingly beautiful post-punk classic, a masterpiece from beginning to end. Not only is this album one of my favourites from the eighties, but also one of my all time favourites.
